Author Interview – Harriet Hodgson

6:30 AM Posted by Unknown , , No comments

Can you share a little of your current work with us? My latest book is Walking Woman: Step-by-Step to a Healthier Heart. In many respects, I wrote it for myself. I have a heart murmur, a souvenir of childhood Scarlet Fever, and high blood pressure. To reduce the burden on my heart, my doctor asked me to lose weight. I started a walking program, lost about 25 pounds, and maintained this weight until tragedy struck. Like many women, I gained the weight back. But I took action, jump-started my walking program, and am at a healthy weight today. Walking Woman is for those who are at risk for heart disease like me, have had a heart attack, are living with heart disease, recovering from surgery, or just want to be fit.

How did you come up with the title? I wanted a title that “said it all” and was alliterative.

Who is your publisher? Despite a long track record as a published author, in this sagging economy I couldn’t find a “normal” publisher. The publishing industry seems to be stalled, so I self-published the book with Amazon. Walking Woman is a print on demand book – the wave of the future.

How do you promote this book? First, I wrote a marketing plan, something that took me about a week. I also wrote the media release and am contacting local media and national organizations. In addition, I’ve developed a talk that supports and expands the book. Of course, I’m turning to the Internet.

Some 42.9 million women are living with heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, heart attack is the number one killer of women in the US. You don’t need to become a statistic. Just 30 minutes of physical activity a day can reduce the risk of heart disease, the American Heart Association notes, and it is asking women to walk. Walking is the easiest and cheapest form of physical activity. If you’re at risk for heart disease, have been diagnosed with it, sufferd a heart attack, are recovering from heart surgery, have a sedentary job, a sedentary lifestyle, or want to be fit, this guide is for you. Walking Woman gets you moving and keeps you moving. Within these pages you will find information, motivation and laughter. You may even find yourself. Fact-by-fact, quote-by-quote, step-by-step, you walk your way to better health.
