Author Interview – R.P. McCabe

5:00 AM Posted by Unknown , No comments

Q. How did you develop your plot and characters?
A. Potential novels begin in my mind around a central character. I imagine my character or characters facing some problem or obstacle in his or her way: some complication preventing the character from getting to a place they want to be. There is always, in my mind, an ancillary collection of characters that will either advance or try to thwart that goal. These characters become the initial cast in the movie that begins to loop in my conscious mind, seeding my subconscious, from which the true writing and depth of the story will come. I don’t plot. I merely write in sensory sequential experience from my characters and allow them to reveal the depth of the story to me. They will introduce me to many characters and many sub-complications I had no idea existed or would even be part of the story they are telling me.
Q. What is your greatest strength as a writer?
A. Truth. I am fearless in the telling of truth. I pull no punches. You can’t make up good fiction. Good fiction springs from a cunning, hopefully dramatic and suspenseful representation of truth with prose that are so artful it seems anyone might be able to do it. Believe me…it is not so simple. By the time you’ve clawed your way across the ‘littered landscape of broken beer bottles of life,’ if you have not garnered a bit of wisdom and truth, you’re probably not a very interesting person. Don’t attempt to be a writer. You’re wasting your time and the time of those who will try to read your work.
Q. What are your current writing projects?
A.  I’m working on two projects. Slaughtered, is the second novel in my Charlie     Caldwell crime series. This novel has as it complication a savage murder that took place in a small Central California community in February 1973. Itsy Bitsy Spider is the sequel to my debut novel, Betrayed. This is an international thriller that once more will focus on financial manipulation at the highest levels of government, and the uber-wealthy families that virtually control the world we live in today: a very tech-heavy novel.
Q. What makes you angry?
A. Religious extremism. Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck Sean Hannity, Ted Cruz, Darrell Isaa, Rand Paul, Paul Braun, Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor, John Boehner…regressive thinkers. Shall I continue?
Q. How do you think people perceive writers?
A. Most people believe writers practice some form of Black Magic. At the highest level of our craft, those writers are indeed special people, no different than a super athlete or musician or great painter. But the majority of us are people who will strive our entire careers to achieve the highest level of command of craft we can. We pursue the writing life out of a love for literature and telling stories.
Thick Fog in Pacheco Pass
Miranda DeCosta has been murdered. Death, as Charlie Caldwell has so cruelly learned, cheats one out of any opportunity to set life on the correct path.
Charlie has come to Divina, the tiny central California town where he grew up, bent on confronting Miranda over the event that defined and destroyed every romantic relationship he has ever entertained.
Questions about Miranda’s unraveling life and violent murder gradually invade Charlie’s consciousness. Bits and pieces of seemingly insignificant information begin to nag at him causing him to question whether the man locked behind bars and charged with her murder is, in fact, the real killer.
Become enthralled while Charlie takes his first baby-steps toward reinventing himself, solves the question of who really murdered Miranda DeCosta and discovers another unforgettable woman who will reshape his life.
Following up from his exciting debut novel, Betrayed, author R.P. McCabe delivers again in this edge-of-the-seat “whodunit”. Thick Fog In Pacheco Pass will keep you guessing to the last page.
