Author Interview – Michael Dismuke

How do you feel about self-publishing?

I wouldn’t have it any other way. I did have a small publisher over a year ago, but it turned out to be a mistake and cost me a lot of time, money and headaches. I feel we are moving into an independent world whether we like it or not, and not only that, we have to. As technology continues to advance and world markets broaden, less and less jobs will be available to support the exploding population. Independent business owners, no matter what they do, will fill that widening gap. We just need to be more open and free with it and have a willingness to support it. Just because a brand name or big company logo is stamped on a product does not mean it is quality. Art comes from the soul and no corporation can package, label or put a patent on that.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I tend to write about technology and how we interact with it by using extreme cases. My ideas and concepts are based on the principle that if we had a certain technology, what would we do with it? In the novel INVASION, I use an alien organism in liquid form that has been engineered and programmed to kill and take over humanity. The idea for the alien organism came from the concept of programming. Imagine what we could do with the ability to program DNA to do and act as we pleased. With highly advanced knowledge of how to build DNA blueprints, we could grow any bioengineered life form in a lab to be whatever our wildest dreams could imagine. It would completely wipe out the industrial evolution and replace it with a biological evolution. We’d grow our technology rather than building it, imagine that.

Who designed your covers?

Right now I do all of my own cover work. I have been talking with an artist friend who will be doing one of my future covers, but for now, most of the cover work is done by me. The covers that I have done so far usually take me quite a bit of time to complete. I tend to work on the covers about midway through writing the book for inspiration and then polish them up over time. I get feedback from friends and family and make final adjustments towards the end. I like to have my covers done before I finish the novel so I can start promoting it.

Can you tell us about your main character?

Invasion has a handful of characters, and each character comes with their own unique style and grace. The neat thing about this novel is that it is written through events. These events allow all the characters to shine and present themselves as leaders throughout the book. Is there one primary character that stands out above all the rest? Of course there is, but that character may differ based on each reader’s experience. I will say this, one character does drive the story, but without the others, the story wouldn’t be quite the same. They each add something new, and as the series continues, readers will learn more about them and who/what they truly are. That’s part of the mystery of the story.

What’s your greatest character strength?

One of my top attributes would be my ability to evaluate situations and problems from all angles. I try to keep an open mind and calculate the variables to form a bigger picture and understanding. I tend to see the good and bad in many things which can make decision making tough at times, but it allows me to see deeper into any given situation and to form a better understanding beyond what was presented. This ability allows me to better solve complex problems and topics.

An otherworldly force opens a gate in a remote mountain range in Colorado and unleashes an alien organism into the forest. Once the gate opens, a shield is placed over the entire area blocking all communications in or out of the zone. It then releases a time pulse every 30 minutes locking everything inside the shield into a checkpoint. If anything destroys the gate, everything within the shield is reset back to the previous checkpoint before the gate was destroyed.

The organism is highly infectious and anything it touches mutates and joins the invading force. They become soldiers with a darker will and help spread the infection even further. Survivors caught within the shield try to escape and stop the organism from leaving, but something keeps destroying the gate, resetting time, and changing their fates.

INVASION is the first volume in the Darkness & Daemons series, event 1-10.
