The Iron Locket (Risen King, #1)The Iron Locket by Samantha Warren
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I'm a big fan of Arthurian legends and so, perhaps, I felt that the book could have been better. Arthur and his 12 knights are brought back to fight the battle of the faery queens. Had it been so plausible to reawaken Arthur, it does make the reader question why Arthur was not awakened any earlier?

That issue aside, the author attempts to create an original plot based on a classic tale that has been told, retold and twisted for many centuries. Does she succeed? For the most part, yes. But it is not an entirely easy story to follow.

Given that ebooks allow the author to hyperlink text, I think this should have been done to enable the reader to easily search for an explanation of the character. I've loved Arthurian legend since the first time I saw Camelot performed with Julie Andrews and Richard Harris. Ever since I've read any version of the story I could get my hands on so I had high hopes for this book.

Overall, the storytelling is good and I wasn't disappointed but confusion ruled in many areas of the story which can affect the reader a lot depending on how much the know and understand the Arthurian legend. Aside from the tried-and-true plot line, the well-drawn, variety of characters make this book a joy to read. Do I recommend this book? If you are looking for something original, then yes. If you are looking for a book that leaves you with no questions, you may not enjoy all of this book.
